Build a Temple around Susan Boyle?

Written by admin on June 20th, 2009

The people from Britain’s Got Talent did Susan Boyle a great disservice. They treated her like she was someone who was ordinary. She is extraordinary in the fullest sense of the word.

For a long time, I have studied swamis and yogis and Indian road chiefs and a zen master, and listened to them when they came through, and I have heard scads of psychedelic divas with god knows what chemicals brewing in their bodies. And I have not in my lifetime seen any other person, spiritual teacher, or entertainer put out that power and quality of personal chi (psychic energy). If Susan Boyle had lived in India 150 years ago, they would probably have built a temple around her.

All of us must wonder what is that quality that can be picked up by a microphone and turned into digital bits, sent bouncing off a satellite around the world, beamed to scores of different countries whose people do not speak the language it’s sung in, and nonetheless it had the effect of giving listeners physical chills and thrills and a high psychic awareness and a tendency to break out crying.

Lest somebody think this is just my opinion, I will give you the testimony of Brian Williams of NBC. He said that he had listened to it and had thrills and chills and cried—and he played it five more times and it did it to him every time, at which point he started sending it to his family and friends and business acquaintances.

This effect is so powerful that even in stories about Susan Boyle, when they play a little clip in back just so you’ll know who the story’s about, it gives me chills and makes me cry. And I don’t even listen to show tunes.

She should have been recognized as an immense personal psychic force. With the huge chi of her night with the audience, she should have been guarded like a diamond merchant. And they let the British and international paparazzi, who are famed for lack of taste, rip her off of her justly earned psychic riches. If some material thing of comparable worth and money had been taken from someone in a similar fashion, it would have been called a felony and would be worth years of time in jail.

That she had the nerve to come back and try again after that bad treatment is evidence of her courage, but the evidence of her heart and soul and her sweetness is in that great voice. We owe her. I wish I could have been there to protect her.

  2. I must say, being psychically and otherwise ripped off is pretty typical for quite a few good musicians. We as a culture do not appreciate culture. We dismiss the tribulations of channeling pure genius the same way we dismiss the homeless and their “self inflicted” wounds or the bankruptcies of people who get sick. Surely its their own fault!

And when they produce miracles, we immediately throw throw the miracles into black holes, with cries of “more more!!!”, by which we mean, “more of the same, again and again”.

Great musicians don’t drink so they can perform so much as they drink because performing opens up wellsprings of energy and it just gets too trippy to even be able to have normal conversations.

You may think you are Woody Guthrie, but I say you are my trained dog! Shut up and jump through the hoop!

When people start building temples to you, its enough to drive you to drink or become otherwise warped.

Think, for example, of Bob Dylan being booed for having gone electric at Forest Hills. What did he do? He got really drunk that night. It was downhill from there and it took him a long time to get back on his feet.

Mozart and Hank Williams were treated horribly and both died young, poor and in ill health. Look at what happened to Judy Garland. Its despicable.

George Jones lives in Franklin, Tennessee, only 40 miles from you. When it comes to singing, it doesn’t get any better than George Jones, (and he is still at it) but from this post, you don’t seem to have noticed! Just sayin…..

I don’t mean to pick on you. As I said, its pretty typical. In my opinion, Peter Rowan and Tim O’brien are high priests of music (they both happen be bluegrass musicians) but most people have never heard of them. Perhaps its just as well.

Now,I don’t, by any means want to get into kind of an argument about someone’s musical tastes, but there’s no way George Jones sends a shiver up my spine the way Susan Boyle does. That’s not to say he’s not good, lots of folks are good, and I could reach into my music collection and pull out a half a dozen artists, or songs, that send a shiver down my spine, but they might not do it for you. So that part is a matter of taste. What makes Susan Boyle unique, is that she was instantly recogizable for what she had, by almost everyone, as soon as she opened her mouth and the first notes came out.

The analogy that comes to mind when I think of this, is the story that Stephen used to say about how all religions were like those old IBM punch cards, with holes punched in them to represent their data. If you lined ‘em all up, and held them up to the light, one hole would shine right through the whole stack. In this case, the light would be shining right through the one for Susan Boyle.

Susan Boyle can SING! Regardless of anything, it is Susan’s full, strong, soaring voice that is the story.

To Susan: THANK YOU for singing to us! Sing and sing and SING, and as long as you record, we will buy your music and be happy.

  5. Lonnirose says:

You have it exactly right! Susan is a mystical force that touches us right down to our souls. I hear the same comment from every person who has taken the time to listen to this wonderful, enchanting lady. If you have not heard her rendition of Wild Horses, I suggest you make every effort to do so. She is magnificent!

  6. Marie says:

Susan has the voice of an Angel which has touched people all over the world. And she still remains very humble just wanting to share her music and make people happy. How lucky could we get.

  7. lee says:

Thanks for a great article for a great singer.

  8. MarieUrsula says:

In an age when logic has created weapons capable of destroying the entire world, along comes Susan Boyle to make people on every continent cry with love and inspiration, and we cannot understand why.

  9. Joly says:

Thank you, Mr. Gaskin, we all felt the same way and have been protecting her online ever since. I think Simon Cowell has also been busy making up for it. You “get” what we all have instinctively known, and you have put it into words beautifully. I believe part of her effect is deep personal integrity, self truth, and part is mystic, arising from the grace of her spiritual focus. Thank you for your article.

  10. Marjenda says:

I do agree with you. I do believe Susan has a speical uniquiness about her. Your words help but still don’t explain the phenomenon. I don’t think it’s good to look at her as a higher power or someone we ought to worpship. With each passing day I sit in awe of her wondering and asking myself ‘what is it about her that has me so captivated?” After all these months I still have no answer. She is no doubt amazing and now I know it’s just the way it is. It’s been an increditible journey and I’m glad I was around to witness it and come along for the ride.

  11. Nurse Kathi says:

Thank-you for your very thought-provoking comments. I for one have not been able to name what this woman does for and to me. I’m 56 and have never reacted to an entertainer like this. She truly touches the souls of some of us.

  12. Yin-Yang says:

The idea and the way of writing this article is very remarkable. And the interpretation is unique. There is an balanced human system in the soul of Susan Boyle before which not many people can see until the Omnipotent reveals. She is not good looking, but her talent is great and powerful.

  13. Anne-Marie says:

I agree that Susan Boyle is remarkable. People around the world love her voice and wish her every success. I don’t think her talent warrants a temple…I think Susan needs to be ‘free’ to entertain and enjoy her new found ’status’. She’s earned it.

  14. Nounours says:

Thank you for this article Sir. We only “know” Susan Boyle for a very short time. Actually, I think we don’t know her at all, I mean, not only her, but all the power and forces which act through her. Or do we, but just refuse yet to accept them? I think she has a very huge burden on her shoulders.

  15. Brenda says:

I’ve just recently come across this article and find it fascinating.
Someone has almost been able to put into words what so many of us have felt when we first saw Susan Boyle sing.
Something about her, I don’t know what it was, just grabbed me mid-April, and hasn’t left go.
I’ve never been a “fan” in my life up until now but this little lady has worked her way into my heart.

  16. hemroids says:

Mind-blowing to see such beauty. Always held personal belief that human minds are capable of far more than we are aware of if only we knew how to access our latent powers. The fact that the Universe is timeless and limitless makes one realise how small-minded we are in believing that we are the only intelligent beings in existence.

  17. Hi Stephen Gaskin thank you …..I really enjoyed reading this article……… I m very impressed with your work. One thing I can say is that this blog is one of the best I’ve read till date…….. Keep up the good work…..
